For My Cleaning Activists
Last week I alluded to this week’s article. It is for the meticulous kitchen cleaner…….notice I did not say my “Clean Freaks” readers. That has such negative connotations, ha! But seriously, I came across a tool of sorts for the disposal. Made by Danco like lasts weeks sink stopper, this week’s item is a brush that will clean out the gunk (is that a technical term) in your disposal. It’s called Brush It Garbage Disposal Brush. It will de-stink your sink!
Brush It is designed to clean the inside surfaces of the garbage disposal. It will scrub out food particles in hard to reach areas. To use Brush It, turn off your disposal and leave it off while you are cleaning. Place Brush It in the disposal, drop soap into the soap well and place your hand on the splash guard. Turn the handle, which will turn the brush. Now you can completely clean out the disposal, removing any debris and food particle. Rinse out the brush and allow it to drip dry. And that’s it! It’s simple, it’s easy, and that’s the way I like it.
Use coupon code BI1106-12 at checkout to receive 20% off your purchase of Brush It. Expires November 12.
Next week I am going to talk to use about a product for rust. It’s great for any type of metal, and it removes rust…..forever!
Now to the email…….
Question: Hello Trudy. I now have a new file added to my computer entitled "Happy Handyman Hints" where I've scanned many of your articles. However, you had a recent hint that I could use now but unfortunately did not keep. Would you please tell me the product you recommended to repair leather. We have a leather recliner with a small split in the headrest. If I remember the description you gave, it was just rubbed on the area and bonded the two sections together. Many Thanks.
Answer: The product is called VLP. It’s glue that will bond any tear in vinyl and leather. It’s clear so it will blend in with any color. It’s a heavy duty glue that when cured is stronger than the original surface. Let me know if you have a hard time finding it.
Question: I read your article religiously every week in Houston (and your Dad’s, before you) and have purchased many of your recommended products to great success. I sure hope you can help me with this one. We had a new frameless shower enclosure installed two weeks ago and, for some ridiculous reason, they smeared silicone caulk in the 1/16 inch gap between the glass and ceramic tile, smearing the caulk all down both sides of the glass and chrome areas holding the glass in place. It looks horrible. I’ve been able to razor most of it out but there is a residue haze left behind. Is there a solvent I can use that won’t damage or discolor the glass, white ceramic tile or white grout? I am desperate.
Answer: Remove as much as you can with a singled-edged razor blade. For the residue left, use Contractor Desolv It and a non-scratch pad. You might have to clean several times to remove all the silicone, but Desolv It will break it down. Afterward, clean off any Desolv It with soap and water. You can clean any metal on the shower door with Flitz Metal Polish.
Question: We have older aluminum windows. I was wondering if there is any polish that would clean the metal on the windows. They are discolored and make the outside of the house look so old. We don’t want to replace the windows.
Answer: Noxon is a metal polish that is perfect for aluminum windows. My brother-in-law uses it for older windows, and his clients love the clean, refreshed look of their windows. It’s stinky, but it works.
Question: We just bought a little cabin and the inside is completely covered in paneling. We love it. It’s so cozy, but the paneling looks dry and faded. What can we do to restore the look of the original paneling without changing the color?
Answer: Feed-N-Wax is the perfect product for your paneling. If you need to add color back in some areas where there is a lot of fading, use Restore-A-Finish in the color closest to your paneling color. It just wipes on like you are dusting. Let Restore-A-Finish dry, and then apply Feed and Wax. It will look great!
