This week brought out the
“handyman” in everyone! So I am going to share all the great
questions. Hopefully one of them hits home with you.
Question: Johnnie, I have a bathtub
that is porcelain. It has a few spots of rust that are getting
bigger. This tub has been resurfaced once after a guest tried to use
toilet bowl cleaner to clean it. Is there a product to treat the
rust spots without recoating the entire tub? I have plans to replace
the tub with a shower stall some day but not today. I am looking for
a temporary fix to keep the tub from rusting through before I can
replace it. Can you help?
Answer: Sure and it's real easy. Use
Rust Cure on the little rust spots. Just use a q-tip to
dot on the rust cure. After a hour, wipe off any oily residue. Then
wait 5-7 days. After that the area will have turned gun metal grey
and never rust again. I promise. Then you can take
and touch up the grey areas. Chip Fix is a porcelain paint
and will hold up in the tub.
One more thing that
you can use Rust Cure on is garden tools that have been left outside
and rusted..just spray them and in a few days they will be rust free
and will never rust again ...even if you leave them outside again!
Question: First let me say how much I
look forward to your column and helpful hints. As a Realtor they
really can come in handy. I have a problem with our exterior red
bricks turning white. Is there a miracle product out there that
could clean them up? Ours is the only house with this problem. I
have moved sprinkler heads, but so far nothing we do helps.
Answer: Well I don't know if it's a
Goof Off Rust Remover works. Just apply it with
a brush or a pump up sprayer, allow it some time to work and then
rinse with clear water. Let dry. If you still have a little haze
left you can apply again. It will also work on iron stains from well
water. It's the only one I know of that you don't have to scrub to
make it work.
Question: It took 2 days of power
washing the cement patio and driveway. Can you suggest what could be
used maintain the new cleansed look? Hate to power wash regularly to
keep the new look. Help!
Answer: Since it's all nice and clean
Drylok Wet Look Sealer. It will make the cleaning
easy. Next time, don't power wash....use the
30 Second Outdoor
It is easy to use and takes less time.
Question: What the best way to restore
or improve the looks of a cedar wood fence after it is weathered and
lost it's color.
Answer: Stain, and use my favorite
Cabot. They make a semi transparent in beautiful colors that
will make your fence look great. Plus it's a oil based product.
Much better for the wood because it will get down into the wood
instead of just laying on the surface like a latex does. You can
brush it on or use a pump up sprayer since it's a fence.
Question: Hello – I am desperate for
advise. I have a rental property that was left with dog poop and
urine in the garage and in 2 of the bedrooms and also cats were kept
in a bathroom and closet and sprayed all over the walls. I am
planning on ripping out all the sheet rock and replacing it and also
ripping out the carpet in the entire home. The problem is the smell.
You can smell it before you even open the front door. What can I do
to get rid of the terrible smell.
Answer: After you rip out all the
sheet rock and carpet and you are down to the concrete slab.
the floor with Bio Zapp. Mop it around and cover every area.
You might have to do it twice. Then put
Air Sponges in each
Air Sponges come in 3 sizes and I would get the 1 pound
ones. Then after you are putting in new materials...keep the Air
Sponges going...that smell gets into everything..but the Air Sponge
will attach to the odor, bring it down to the floor where you can
vacuum it up. Good Luck.
