I had a reader contact me about her
sliding glass door. She said that she had a hard time moving it back
and forth. She had moved a big piece of furniture in the house –
and the biggest opening was the sliding glass door. She said that it
was really hard to use after that but she hadn’t worried about it
much until now. So what could I do to help her? This is such a easy
fix. First of all I wanted her to look and see if the track had been
damaged. All it takes is a set of pliers to straighten up the track.
Clean the track with paint thinner on a rag to remove all dirt and
dust. Then spray the track with a lubricant I like to call liquid
ball bearings, Tri Flow. Spray the track, and then slowly open and
close the door so that you lubricate all of the rollers. Sometimes
that is all you need to do. But if the track is really damaged
installing a stainless steel cap over the existing track is a great
idea. Installing the cap will give the door a smooth surface to roll
over. The stainless steel cap runs about $10, and the lubricant
Tri-Flow is under $9. Tri-Flow is hands down better than most spray
lubricants because it doesn’t attract dust and dirt. You can spray
garage door rails, keys, mirror closet doors, hinges- and so many
more. This is not a difficult fix- remember, everything is easy if
you know how to do it, and you have the right product.
Now to the email…..
Question: Johnnie did I read that you
have a book of tips that I can buy? I try and collect all these
articles and my filing system is failing. HA!
Answer: I sure do, it’s The Best of
Johnnie Chuoke, Vol 10. It’s the best book we have ever put
together. We even had it spiral bound so that it is easier to read.
It sure beats trying to keep all those articles together. It’s on
Question: Johnnie I have a stainless
steel sink that I somehow lost the strainer for the disposal side.
How does that happen? Well I was wondering do you have a suggestion
for a replacement. I have bought about 3 and none of them fit.
Answer: We have this great sink
strainer / stopper that will cover up rust and old steel drain holes.
And the best part is that they fit all drains and garbage disposers.
It’s called a Sinktastic. Sinktastic is made of flexible
thermoplastic. Sinktastic is even infused with a fresh fragrance.
Sinktastic comes in silver, black and white and cost less than $5. A
great cleaner for stainless steel is Sheila Shine.
Question: I just had the worst time
removing some outside light bulbs at the coastal house. Is there
anything that I can use on the new bulbs so that when I replace them,
they don’t break? I know you can’t just use any kind of oil.
Answer: What you want to use is a
product called Di-electric grease. It will make it easier to remove
old bulbs. It’s especially great to use around salt water. But I
put it on all the new bulbs around the house inside and out.
Question: I have black streaks on the
bottom of my bathroom mirror. What can I do to fix that? What
Answer: If you already have the black
streaks on the mirror, it’s too late. But you can cover it up by
framing around the mirror. It will really update the bath, and cover
up those ugly black marks. If you have a new mirror, you can treat
the new mirror with Mirror Edge Sealant. It will seal the mirror and
kept it from absorbing moisture. (and that’s what causes the
