This article is and will always be about providing information on Do It Yourself products. Maybe it’s a product that is a temporary fix until you can get a professional in or a permanent fix that you were easily able to do yourself. I was helping a customer yesterday who had a small leak under the sink in the kitchen. She did not want to call a plumber because of the expense involved and wanted to see if she could tackle it herself. I took her to the tape aisle and showed her X-Treme Tape. X-Treme Tape is a tape that was developed for the military and will give an air and water tight seal. It can handle temperatures up to 500 degrees, insulates up to 400 volts and has a tinsel strength of up to 600 PSI. So on her water pipe this is a permanent fix. She saved money on a plumber, and the X-Treme Tape retails for under $10. X-Treme Tape comes in a 10 foot length and is not a sticky tape. The tape adheres to itself when you pull and stretch the tape. So you can use it on a hose on the car, sprinkler pipe in the yard, garden hoses, handles on tools, use like a zip tie on electrical bundles if it can be wrapped then X-TremeTape can be used. If you ever need to remove X-Treme Tape you simply slice it with a utility blade and it will fall off the project leaving no sticky adhesive residue. It’s a great temporary clamp for odd shaped projects. Throw a roll in the car, RV, and keep one in the tool box. For a free sample send us a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope and we will put it in the mail for you.

Question: I just had a sewer service come out and clean out the roots in the lines of my sewer system. Is there any DIY way that I can stay on top of this so I don’t have to call him again?

Answer: There are products that are 99% Copper Sulfate that will remove small roots in sewer and leach lines. Root Kill is the product that we carry and it comes in a 2 pound container for you to use 2 nights in a row. Put ½ the container in the toilet at night and flush, and again the next night. You don’t have to use Root Kill, just anything that is 99% Copper Sulfate.

Question: I have 2 toilets that whistle when flushed. Can you tell me what has to be done to stop this whistle?

Answer: You need to change to a Fluidmaster 400A toilet fill valve. They are easy to install. Turn off the water to the toilet, flush and then install. The height on the valve is adjustable and it has a 5 year warranty. If someone is going to whistle at you…it shouldn’t be the toilet.

Question: We just purchased a home in which they had carpet on the concrete outside. We have pulled up the carpet but there is a residue of white stuff still left over. We have tried paint thinner, goo gone, and nothing gets it up. We want to clean it up so we can stain it. Do you know what can remove the residue?

Answer: There is a mastic remover called Bean E Doo that works on all types of mastic. It doesn’t make a difference whether its latex or oil based Bean E Doo will remove it. It’s the sister product to Soy Gel paint remover and both products are made out of soy beans. It’s very safe and is low in odor. Just apply the Bean E Doo in one 1/8 inch thick layer and let it work….a hour later…check and make sure that all the adhesive has released from the concrete by rubbing your finger down though the Bean E Doo and see if you see clean concrete. Then just rinse it off. It won’t hurt your grass.
