The Survival Kit for the Homeowner
I want to tell you about 3 products that have been on our shelves for many years. They all have such good stories behind them and I want to share the history that goes with them with you, our family of readers. The first product was an Oxford Chemical product from many years ago and it was D-Germ. It was made for hospital maintenance cleaning crews to disinfect the bathrooms and toilets in the hospitals. Oxford then introduced it to a retail audience and we stumbled upon the product at a trade show. It is an acid that will clean your toilet better than any product that we have ever found. Oxford told Dad how to clean the toilet from the inside out by putting it down the overflow pipe in the tank and letting it work its way down through the toilet. What is nice about D-Germ is the smell, there is little to no smell as opposed to other acid cleaners that use a different type of acid. Just because an acid might smell stronger, doesn’t mean it works any better. D-Germ will also clean off soap scum and hard water deposit off ceramic tile, just remember to use gloves. The next product that has a great story is Air Sponge. We were at an Ace Hardware Show in Florida many years ago and my job was to book all the hotels. I booked us into what I thought was a Marriott. Well it might have dreamed of being a Marriott one day but not the day we were there. The rooms smelled so bad that we had to turn up the AC to FREEZE so we could not smell the odors in the rooms. While we were at the Ace Show we ran into a husband and wife team selling Air Sponge. He guaranteed that the Air Sponge would remove any odor in a room by just opening up the container and letting it sit in the room for a few hours. He slipped one in my Dad’s tote and that was it. Well one of our managers took the Air Sponge and used it in his room. The next morning he went and got Dad and before you knew it we were having Air Sponge sent to all the Acme Lumber stores. Air Sponge was originally made for the New York bomb attacks and was brought in to the building so that the employees could go back to work without the smell of smoke. The last product is by all accounts the funniest. My grandfather built a lot of homes in Universal City and he had some land left and built apartment complexes. One of those was called the KonTiki. He sold the KonTiki and we thought that was the end of it. Nope! The buyer from California went belly up and we got the KonTiki back, just not in the same condition. The odor in the apartments was unbelievable and they were completely un-rentable. Dad tore out the carpet, trying to get rid of the pet odors but even after new carpet was laid the rooms still reeked of pet urine. Well one day this traveling salesman named Mickey walked into the Acme downtown and asked my dad if he or his customers had a problem with odors? Then he took a onion out of his brief case and took a big bite out of the onion and then exhaled in my dad’s face. (Awful) Then he took out this spray bottle and gave his mouth a spritz and then exhaled on dad again. Well this time there was no odor. Dad grabbed him and his product drove out to the KonTiki and asked him to fix the odor in the apartments. Mickey asked for a mop and proceeded to pour out the Bio Zapp on the concrete floor and mop it around. Dad said the odor immediately got better, and then Mickey mopped it again and explained that the odor was down deep into the concrete. By the third time Mickey mopped the floor, the odor was completely gone and Dad and Mickey became close friends. These 3 products are part of what we call the Survival Kit for the homeowner. Whether you have an odor in the air, in the concrete or upholstery, or your toilet just is not as clean as you would like we at Johnnie Chuoke’s Home and Hardware are here to help you, because you are just like family to us.
